COLLINS: If you don’t know who you’re voting for, stay home

Oct 14, 2022 | 5:30 AM

BY TOMORROW NIGHT, we’ll know what our new Council and School Board will look like for the next four years.

If you vote, and I hope you do, make sure it’s after due consideration of the candidates and their platforms.

We may think we know a candidate because they look great in their picture, or someone we know says they’re voting for them. I pay little attention to that. Just because someone is a friend doesn’t mean they share all the same beliefs that I do.

I don’t vote to support my friends or neighbours. I vote for people who I think have the ability to lead the City.

Same with unscientific polls that only depend on who wants to play the game. They’re a waste of time and often are a source of misinformation. Ultimately you need to do your due diligence.

There have been a number of gatherings over the past month that have given you the opportunity to talk to the candidates and see what they think about certain issues. Similarly with online and TV coverage. Lots of chances to read about and research individuals who you think represent your views.

One thing I strongly suggest is that you don’t vote for someone if you don’t know what they stand for.

Finally, don’t worry if you have fewer than the maximum number of candidates. Don’t pad the list. Don’t vote for people whose positions you don’t agree with.

When I made my list, I didn’t have the maximum number for either Council or School Trustee. And after really studying the platforms and issues, I actually cancelled one name and added two others. It’s worth the effort to do it right.

Now take the final step. Get out to the ballot box and make a difference. But to be totally honest, don’t vote if you’re not going to do it right.

I’m a believer in quality versus quantity. If you only see two people who you know will do a good job, vote for them. just two people. Don’t give free votes to candidates who might not be suitable

And unless you’re dealing with the ballot for Mayor and you’re torn between a couple of candidates with only one choice, (very possible this year) please don’t be one of those people who says “I don’t know who to vote for. I probably won’t make up my mind until I get in the voting booth “

If you’re in that category, you’re better off to just stay home.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
