KAMLOOPS — Arjun Singh is all about making the community better. A Rotarian, Singh tries to be involved in the community whenever he can.

The long-time city councillor is now trying to make Kamloops better in the mayor’s chair.

“For me, after 14 years on city council, I felt it was kind of time,” Singh told CFJC Today about his decision to run for mayor in 2022. “I’ve been very fortunate with great councils I’ve worked on. I’ve worked very extensively with provincial and federal advocacy groups, so I can bring that to the role. I really believe in bringing people together, and right now we really need to bring people together on a whole host of issues.”

Among the issues facing Kamloops, community safety is Singh’s No. 1 priority.

“I think we really need to advocate for the end of this catch-and-release and repeat offenders, prolific offenders. The province has some authority there too, so talk to both the province and federal government about that,” he said.

Singh’s platform is also about responsible and accountable governance, reliant and profitable businesses, climate action and an overall vibrant community.

He says his extensive experience at city hall differentiates him from the other candidates.

“The mayor’s only one vote. You have to work with council and you have to work with city staff, you’ve got to work with the community, so my background with engagement I think helps me do that pretty well,” he said.”

Overall, he says he loves the community and loves to serve the people in local government.

“My parents came here in the 60s. [Kamloops] has been really good to my parents. I love local government. I just love the collaborative nature of city council where you agree well and you also disagree well, so it’s a good fit for me,” he said.
