KAMLOOPS — The East Meadows Plateau wildfire sparked on Wednesday approximately 20 kilometers north of the city of Kamloops. Wednesday, multiple aircraft including air tankers, skimmers and planes known as ducks attacked the fire from the sky, with an initial attack crew of nine personnel on the ground.

The fire was initially measured at three hectares in size, however after overnight growth and better mapping, it has more than doubled in size.

Fire Information Officer Shaylee Stearns confirmed the wildfire service has not seen growth on the blaze today.

“That fire is still classified as out of control; it’s estimated at seven hectares in size. This morning we were able to get our air tankers back out on the fire along with two helicopters throughout the day. They are assisting 29 ground personnel, who are working to establish guard with heavy machinery on this fire,” said Stearns.

Since CFJC News spoke with Stearns, the fire has been updated to 9.4 hectares.

The fire is no longer as visible from the city of Kamloops. Yesterday, it was burning Rank Two and Three and Stearns confirmed conditions have calmed Thursday.

“We are not seeing that smoke plume that we were seeing yesterday,” Stearns told CFJC Today in the early afternoon. “I don’t have an exact rank for fire behavior on the ground, I haven’t got that from crews. It isn’t the hot heat of the day yet, that definitely has a effect on fire behavior that we see and the winds as well,” added Stearns.
