KAMLOOPS — On Tuesday (July 12), a fire engulfed the home at 2209 Sifton Lane, apparently having ignited on an adjoining deck. The home was heavily damaged by the fire, which was quickly knocked down by Kamloops Fire Rescue.

All fire halls in the city responded to the two-alarm blaze as the first firefighters on the scene reported that the structure was full involved. Jeff Pont, Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) Life Safety Educator confirmed that nobody was injured in the fire, but sadly two pets were found deceased in the home once the fire was out.

“Upon further investigation by our fire investigators, they determined that it was electrical. On the looker’s left of the house, there was a TV and some other electrical outlets plugged into a power bar,” said Pont.

The first trucks from KFR were on scene within five minutes of the call, allowing them to take a defensive position and protect neighboring homes. But Pont noted that the subject property had cedar hedges which caught fire, and could have spelled disaster for the adjoining properties.

“The video online shows a really good example of cedar bushes between homes. With our FireSmart program we really want to talk people out of planting those cedar bushes — they are really volatile. The deciduous tree behind the house didn’t burn, the cedar bushes in front of the house did burn. Had our crews taken longer to get the fire, it could have been a whole different story,” added Pont.
