COLLINS: New moves by Finland and Sweden create dilemma for Russia

May 29, 2022 | 6:50 AM

This week has provided new challenges for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

From finding out how poorly trained his soldiers are, to the intense resistance by Ukrainian forces, to the growing impact of sanctions by the West. And now Russia faces a new problem.

Both Finland and Sweden are interested in joining NATO. Finland has an extensive shared border with Russia, potentially stretching Russian resources even thinner.

The only problem that has cropped up is the fact that Turkey is threatening to vote against membership because of some truly minor political issues.

Turkey would have a lot to gain from allowing the two Nordic countries into the Organization. Turkey has forever been at the center of battles in the Middle East. Spreading things out would be helpful.

Turkey may only be after concessions, but either way, they are holding a big hammer right now.

It would be the wrong move for Turkey to play kingmaker and destroy an opportunity to wound the great Russian bear, which is not as great as we thought it was.

Putin still has strength in numbers, and he has all his nukes, so Russia can’t be taken lightly. But it is reeling a bit right now and this is as good a time as any to sting a little harder.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
