COLLINS: Climate plan doesn’t cut it

Mar 31, 2022 | 7:03 AM

WE SPEAK, but we don’t do.

That pretty much sums up Canada’s $9.1 billion climate plan announced this week in Vancouver by the prime minister.

It’s a lot of money, but we’ve delayed serious action for so long that it’s really just a drop in the bucket.

Few details have been released so far, but we can already see huge gaps.

Part of the issue going forward is that the energy sector is going to have to reduce emissions by 42 per cent. That’s going to be tough when we’re going to be relying more and more on those resources in light of what’s happening in Ukraine.

But we’re going to have to bite the bullet at some point, and it’s better sooner than later.

I remember when David Suzuki started preaching the gospel on climate change years ago. Some claimed him to be a “Dr. Doom” for his views, which were pretty radical at the time. Others called him a conspiracy theorist.

But his theories have been pretty close to the mark, and now we are frantically trying to reverse a process that may be irreversible.

In 2008, Dr. Suzuki told students at McGill University they should make every effort to get rid of those who did nothing about climate change, because it was a criminal act.

We are now paying for that lack of action.

Paying for it with the lives of future generations who will have to clean up the mess we leave behind. A mess that even $9.1 billion won’t do much to fix.
