Downtown Kamloops undergoes winter transformation for holiday movie shoot

KAMLOOPS — Downtown Kamloops is looking busy and festive this week, as shooting continues for an upcoming holiday movie.

The 200-block of Victoria Street was closed to vehicle traffic Thursday (Mar. 10) for film crews to shoot scenes for Single and Ready to Jingle.

Most of the snow on city streets has melted (save for a few grey piles) so to bring back that fresh winter look to turn Kamloops into ‘St. John, Alaska’, the production team got creative.

“This is a Christmas movie, so we’re dressing it (downtown) up like Christmas,” says director Wendy Ord, “We have lots of fake snow going down, and lots of Christmas lights.”

Crews have been shooting in Kamloops over the past few weeks, using the BC Wildlife Park and other locations before heading into the downtown core.

“We knew right from the beginning our ‘hero’ locations. A ‘hero’ location is the location that most of the action happens at,” explains producer CJay Boisclair. “And I won’t give it away, you guys will have to watch, but it is a beautiful home that’s here in Kamloops. It drew the whole story to them.”

Alongside location variety, film producers say the people in Kamloops make it even more appealing. Whether its the locals they hire, the businesses who pitch in, or the energy of the interested passersby.

“Coming from Vancouver to a place like Kamloops, it’s been really refreshing to see the sheer level of excitement and willingness to be involved,” notes producer Jeremy Kulyk.

Kulyk says the film is one of several Champlain Media West (CMW) productions planned for the future, and the company hopes to build up the Kamloops film market.

“We’re hopefully here to stay and build a community, and inspire people to break out of their shell and be creative,” says Kulyk. “Hopefully this is the start.”

To see how the final product turned out, producers say Single and Ready to Jingle will be available for viewing in time for the 2022 Christmas season.

“It’s a very cute, fun, uplifting film,” adds Ord. “I think people from Kamloops are going to love to tune in to see this one.”
