Weekend for Kamloops RCMP includes drug seizures, business break and enter

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 367 calls for service from midnight Friday Feb. 18, to 9 a.m. on Feb. 21, 2022. Below are some highlights from those reports.

Truck fire closes highway

Police say the East Trans Canada Highway was closed for about 45 minutes last Friday evening (Feb. 18), after a truck rear-ended a semi, and burst into flames.

Around 8:45 p.m Friday., a frontline officer was driving westbound on the highway when she observed the vehicle fire. The driver of the semi truck was uninjured, while the driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Kamloops Fire Rescue responded and extinguished the flames, with the highway reopening shortly after.

Woman arrested for weapons offence

Kamloops RCMP arrested two people Friday night after receiving a report of a woman who was threatening people with a large piece of glass.

Around 9:20 p.m on Feb. 18, officers attended an address in the 300-block of Columbia Street, and found an intoxicated suspect inside. The woman was arrested for weapons offences, and take to cells.

While police were dealing with this report, another intoxicated woman had begun screaming and throwing items. This second individual was also arrested and taken to cells.

Both women were released when sober, without further charge consideration.

Robbery report leads to arrest

RCMP say two people were taken into custody on Friday evening after a panic alarm was activated at a store in the 600-block of Seymour Street.

On Feb. 18, around 9:20 p.m., frontline officers responded to the alarm and a report of two people allegedly stealing from the store and threatening the cashier. The suspects, a man and a woman, were located by police and the woman allegedly resisted arrest. Both suspects were taken to cells.

The man was released upon further investigation, and the woman was given a court date with conditions, and charge recommendations are anticipated.

Drug seizure in parkade

Police patrols downtown led to the seizure of drugs and cash on Friday night. Around 11:45 p.m on Feb. 18, an officer saw a man riding a bicycle into a parkade off Seymour Street, and went inside.

On the upper floors, police found several people huddled together. One man was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, and a search that followed led to the seizure of more than 50 grams of suspected fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, and more than $2,000 in cash.

Nearby, an abandoned backpack was also seized, which contained more than 440 grams of suspected cocaine, fentanyl, and crystal meth; more than $5,600 in cash, and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

The man was released pending further investigation.

Weapons, drugs seized

Kamloops RCMP say stopping a suspicious vehicle ended with a struggle, arrest, and the seizure of drugs and weapons this weekend.

On Feb. 20 around 1:40 a.m., a frontline officer patroling in Valleyview when she conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle that had license plates which didn’t match. The occupants were detained for investigation, during which a man became resistant and a struggle occurred that went to the ground.

A search following his arrest led to the discovery of various weapons, including what appeared to be an improvised firearm, baton, knife, suspected fentanyl, and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

The man was taken to cells and released when sober, with charge recommendation anticipated following the investigation’s conclusion.

Business break and enter

Police are investigating after a reported smash and grab, break and enter at a business in Valleyview this weekend.

On Feb. 20 at approximately 5 a.m., frontline officers responded to a report of a commercial alarm in the 1900-block of the East Trans Canada Highway. Once on scene, they discovered the front door had been smashed and the security grate was knocked down.

A number of Milwaukee tools were also stolen.

Possible assault downtown

Kamloops RCMP are investigating a possible assault in the downtown area over the weekend.

On Feb. 20 around 10:30 a.m, police were called to a Lansdowne Street business after a man entered with multiple head injuries.

When police arrived on scene, an ambulance was tending to a man with wounds possibly caused by an assault. The man was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. RCMP say the man was uncooperative with the investigation.
