KAMLOOPS — Marcy Beauchamp wanted her newly-released children’s book to be unmistakably Kamloops.

It’s called C’mon Everyone, Let’s Boogie, and it tells the story of the long-running Boogie the Bridge fundraising run. Beauchamp launched it at Dufferin Elementary School Friday (Feb. 11).

With illustrations of Victoria Street and Overlanders Bridge, plus notable faces from around town, locals will recognize their city in the book.

Beauchamp started writing the book when the pandemic hit.

“When Boogie was canceled in 2020, I was thinking of all the Kamloops charities that weren’t going to benefit because of course with no participants, there would be no money,” she said. “I was just thinking of what we could do to bring some more money into Boogie.”

All the proceeds from the book sales will go to local charities.

Literacy in Kamloops bought a copy of the book for every school in the district to inspire students to participate in the 25-year tradition.

“We’re hoping that teachers will share the history of Boogie with their classes and just inspire the youngsters to want to participate and be active,” said Fiona Clare of Literacy in Kamloops. “Literacy is not just about reading and writing, but it’s also about physical literacy and digital literacy.”

While the book encourages kids to participate in the Boogie, it also reminds them of the benefits of movement year round.

“We want them to get out and move for health and happiness. especially for their mental health. Mental health really matters and it’s proven that movement makes a big change. and for movement to be fun for the kids,” said Jo Berry, founder of Boogie the Bridge.

“It’s just so much fun because I love to run. I love the excitement of Boogie cause it’s just a nice thing to do with your family and friends,” said student Emma Friesen.

The book even encouraged some students to be creative in their own way.

“It was really cool because I got to see the illustrations. And I really like to draw,” said Maddison Maidnent.

“I like to try and look at some pictures and then try to build it out of Lego,” said Felix Tsuji.
