KAMLOOPS — The company behind Vancouver’s Compass Card will also provide a province-wide electronic fare system for B.C. Transit, which includes Kamloops.

According to a news release on Wednesday (Jan. 26), the system, Umo, will allow users to pay with a mobile app, reloadable smart card, or a debit or credit card. There will be no need to pre-purchase tickets or carry exact change. Users can also use one card to travel in many transit systems through the province.

“The transformational electronic fare collection system project… will make selecting transit as your mode of choice more convenient and accessible,” B.C. Transit President Erinn Pinkerton says.

B.C. Transit says the system will be rolled out in two phases. It will be piloted in the Victoria Regional Transit System starting in fall 2022. Other communities across the province, including Kamloops, will have the system implemented afterwards.
