Dog returns to Kamloops family after weeks away

KAMLOOPS — Joshua Knaak is picking up his dog, Sammie-Marie, from Aberdeen Veterinary Hospital.

She’s getting a physical after being missing for 13 days.

“Just had one of those real tragic surprises where she snuck out the door and disappeared. And she’s a fast mover. She made it from Royal Avenue to [McArthur Island Park] pretty quickly,” Knack told CFJC News.

The rescue dog was adopted just days before she ran away. Because she’s nervous about being in a new home, she ran off.

His family believed she had drowned after being spotted falling through river ice.

“I got a phone call from a gentleman named Rick, who had spotted her running down the bank going out on the ice and disappeared. You could see the tracks and… she went in,” he explains.

City of Kamloops Community Services Officer Alexa Kouroupis handed Sammie back to her owner. Almost two weeks later, Kamloops bylaw got a call from a resident on the North Shore who said a stray dog was in their yard.

Kouroupis attended the call and after some coaxing, she was able to bring Sammie home.

“I went out there and the dog was under a boat. When I got there, [s]he seemed pretty scared. It took me about an hour, I was finally able to get [her] out,” Kouroupis says.

Kouroupis says returning Sammie home has been a highlight in her career. It was a joyful day for Joshua, too.

“At first we didn’t believe it because we didn’t think there was any way. But when we walked in, she recognized us, and we recognized her. And uh, yeah, there was a lot of tears,” he says.

After a ruff couple of weeks, Sammie has gotten the O-K from her vet to go home — and you might even say, she has a new leash on life.
