KAMLOOPS — More than 85,000 vehicles were checked in 2021 by the Kamloops Crime Prevention Speed Watch Program, according to Kamloops RCMP.

The program uses RCMP volunteers to operate ICBC reader boards and radar equipment to check and display the speed of those driving by, particularly in school zones throughout Kamloops.

“Volunteers work closely with the Crime Prevention and Traffic Units to provide a proactive presence in high complaint areas, and to use that presence to help change negative driving behaviours,” Cpl. Dana Napier says.

Speed Watch’s 14 volunteers attended around 50 locations throughout the city and followed up on vehicle checks with 48 warning letters to their registered owners.
