UPDATE: RCMP arrest wanted man after standoff at downtown Kamloops motel

Oct 4, 2021 | 11:15 AM

KAMLOOPS — UPDATE: RCMP have arrested the subject of a heavy police presence near the east end of downtown Kamloops Monday morning (Oct. 4).

In a news release, Cpl. Dana Napier says 25-year-old Tristan Fernandez was taken into custody at about 11:30 a.m. with the help of a police service dog.

An officer had reported seeing Fernandez enter the Canada’s Best Value Inn, formerly known as the Acadian Inn, earlier in the day.

An arrest warrant was issued for Fernandez after a robbery on August 3 that took place near the 1300-block of Battle Street.

Napier says Fernandez will remain in custody pending his next court appearance.

There is no indication the arrest is related to a heavy police presence at a Valleyview motel later in the day.

EARLIER: Kamloops RCMP have surrounded the Acadian Inn Monday morning (Oct. 4) after an officer spotted a man with an outstanding arrest warrant.

At around 9:00 a.m., the man was seen around the Columbia and 13th Avenue area.

Officers responded immediately and there is still a heavy police presence in the area as the situation unfolds.

“Given the information that we have relating to this man, we have conducted a risk assessment and based on that risk assessment we are taking this matter seriously and want to make sure the area is safe from individuals,” said Cpl. Dana Napier. “What we’re asking for right now from the public is to stay away from the area.”

CFJC Today is able to confirm that at least one nearby business has been closed as RCMP investigate.
