KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has purchased a key property on Tranquille Road for $7.1 million to create new affordable housing and market rental housing on the North Shore.

377 Tranquille Road, the site of the former Duchess strip club and Northbridge Hotel, will be turned into a market redevelopment opportunity in the future. The City also purchased 346 Campbell Avenue, a vacant lot that previously contained a liquor store. It will work with BC Housing to determine a future development partnership for affordable housing.

“Both of which are really needed in terms of the redevelopment of the North Shore,” said Ken Christian, Mayor of Kamloops.

“Part of the North Shore plan which the planning department currently has out in engagement is really starting to congeal around that Tranquille corridor and the importance of that particular economic strip to the vibrancy of the North Shore and the vibrancy of Kamloops,” he continued.

The City of Kamloops will be hiring an operator for the hotel and has informed the building’s current tenants that their tenure is secure.

Despite rumors that have circulated, the mayor says the property was purchased close to market value and asking price.

The City says the announcement is being made very early and will announce more information at a later date.
