In a news release, RCMP Southeast District spokesman Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says officers were called to the 400-block of Lansdowne Street at about 1:16 p.m. Thursday (July 15) for the report of two suspicious vehicles in a parking garage. A silver Saturn sedan there had no license plates, and when officers ran the license plate of a white Ford F-250, they found the plate had been reported stolen.

A frontline officer tried to conduct a traffic stop of the pickup, but it suddenly reversed into the police cruiser before sped away from the area.

O’Donaghey says officers decided not to pursue the vehicle out of safety concerns.

Just moments later, the pickup truck collided with a white Mazda at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Columbia Street. The truck continued after the collision, rolling over a parked Harley-Davidson motorcycle nearby and crunching a residential fence before coming to rest.

The driver of the pickup ran off on foot, but was arrested a short time later, not far from the scene. Witness video shows officers escorting the suspect from a property in the 600-block of Columbia Street.

B.C. Ambulance attendants took the driver of the Mazda to hospital with injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

The suspect, who is 33 years old and from Kamloops, is a prohibited driver allegedly breaching his probation. He was set to appear in court Friday on a number of new charges.

Any witnesses to Thursday’s incident are asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000.
