Heat and air quality warning issued for Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Environment Canada has issued heat and air quality warnings for Kamloops this week.

So far this month, B.C. ambulance services has responded to five heat-related patient events, compared to one heat-related call in the entire month of July last year.

It has been a hot and smoky month — and today the smoke was very thick — which resulted in many areas of the city are in the ’11+’ category on the Air Quality Health Index.

Dr. Carol Fenton, medical health officer at Interior Health, said this is going to be especially hard on anyone with lung or heart concerns.

Although the elderly, children and people working outdoors are most at-risk, the general public is reminded to stay indoors, stay out of the sun and stay hydrated.

However, she said staying indoors will be more difficult for people who don’t have air conditioning and they should seek refuge in well ventilated public spaces, such as libraries and community centres.

The City of Kamloops has opened the Sandman Centre as a cooling centre to help residents without air conditioning cope with the heat and smoke.

It’s open tonight until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
