KAMLOOPS — The record-breaking heat has resulted in some big changes to be aware of Monday (June 28) in Kamloops.

In an email to parents, Kamloops-Thompson School District Superintendent Terry Sullivan confirms bus service will not be offered for the final two days of the school year, which are Monday and Tuesday.

Sullivan notes the district’s 85 buses are not air-conditioned, and the district believes it is unsafe to transport students in those conditions.

Schools throughout the district will remain open, with the exception of Sun Peaks School, which includes a number of portable classrooms that are not air-conditioned. Classes at Sun Peaks have been cancelled for the remainder of the year.

Elsewhere, all COVID-19 immunization appointments scheduled for the clinic at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre have been moved to the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC).

In an email to people scheduled to receive their vaccination doses, Interior Health (IH) says the closure is due to the extreme heat.

IH says it anticipates the McArthur Island location will be closed all week, but the TCC will be able to accommodate the additional appointments.

Vaccination dates and times will not change.

The late-June heatwave is unlike anything the B.C. Interior has experienced in recorded history. Lytton set a record Sunday for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada.
