KAMLOOPS — June is a big month for ALS fundraising in Kamloops.

Last weekend, the annual ALS Walk was held. Today (June 23), pros at Mt. Paul Golf Course were taking on the ALS Golf-a-Thon.

For many folks, 10 rounds is more golf than they play in a year. For Brett Greenman, it’s not even lunchtime.

“This is my 10th round [today],” Greenman told CFJC Today. “I’m hoping to play 10 to 15 more.”

The annual ALS Golf-a-Thon pits pros from across B.C. against their own endurance. Beginning before the sun comes up, these pros play all day, trying to squeeze in as many rounds as is humanly possible. It’s all to raise funds for the ALS Society of B.C.

“We’ve [raised] $2,000 to a little bit higher. We’re shooting for a little bit more this year,” Mt. Paul Golf Course Owner Dan Latin explained. “I think we’ve got some corporate sponsors that’ll kick that number up a bit. Throughout the province, it’s the ALS [Society’s] biggest fundraiser.”

At his current pace, Greenman could play more than 180 holes of golf. That’s not even close to his Golf-a-Thon best.

“In 2018, I was working at Sun Rivers, now known as Big Horn Golf & Country Club,” Greenman recalled. “We did 616 holes in just over 21 hours. We were scheduled to do 24 hours, but thunderstorms stopped us.”

According to Greenman, that much golf wears on even the most seasoned players.

“You go through some waves of playing well and some waves of being exhausted,” he said. “But it’s all fun.”

For Latin, who was also out whacking the ball around the course early this morning, the Golf-a-Thon is a great way for these pros to give back to the community.

“I think it’s just a great cause,” Latin said. “There’s obviously lots of them out there. My youngest son – one of the guys he played hockey with – his dad was diagnosed with ALS. That was years ago. It’s something that needs help and we’re happy to be part of it.”

Donations for the Mt. Paul ALS Golf-a-Thon are being accepted online or at the clubhouse until the end of June.
