Kamloops’ Madison Olds releases new single, eager to perform in front of an audience again

KAMLOOPS — For everyone, 2020 was a year like no other, especially for Kamloops-born musician Madison Olds.

On top of going through the COVID-19 pandemic with the rest of the world, Olds tackled a tall task of raising nearly $75,000 for stem cell treatment to help her partner walk again.

The previous year was the inspiration for “Cliché of Falling in Love,” Olds’ latest single that released on June 10. Olds called it the perfect way to “button up” her music before her EP is released in July.

“This last year has been so crazy for all of us and I think it’s affected us in ways that we only know from our personal experiences,” Olds said. “We all handle it differently. We’re all struggling to find the happiness right now and the reason to keep going because it’s so unknown. It was a perfect way to remind people what we’re going through is okay.”

Olds’ EP is a compilation of all the songs she’s released the last year, plus a new song called “Drowning in my Thoughts.” She said listeners can expect the EP to be a rollercoaster of emotions to represent the ups and downs of 2020.

“It’s going to be pretty similar [to songs I’ve written in the past]. There’s one song on it that’s kind of branching into a new direction of music that’s got more instrumentation, a little funk and punk, so I think it’s a nice way of easing people from the Madison they know to hopefully the Madison they’ll like,” she said. “Hopefully, we’ll be out of this soon and start working on some new, fun music that puts people in a good mood.”

Along with getting back to “fun music,” Olds is eager to returning to performing in front of a live audience again as B.C.’s Restart continues to unfold. Olds said she already has a gig booked in the lower mainland – provincial health guidelines permitting – and she admitted it was hard to fathom after 16 months of live events being put on hold in B.C.

“With COVID-19 and this crazy year we’ve had, I think a lot of us have settled into being introverts,” she said. “It’s been nice to have that separation from people, especially being a musician. The moment you show up to a venue to the moment you get to your car, it’s all a show. When you’re talking with people and interacting with the audience, you always have to be on your A game and put on a smile and perform for people.”

“It’s going to be such an interesting transition period from going to literally being a hermit for the last year to being that entertainment monkey on stage again. But I am so ready to see people again. It doesn’t matter what I do, where I am, or what I’m wearing, I am just counting down the moments until I can perform again for people.”

Olds hopes to be back in Kamloops to perform at a fundraiser in August. She said more details will be released as the month draws near.
