Kamloops council to re-visit possible park use for outdoor fitness classes

KAMLOOPS — Next Tuesday (May 18), Kamloops Council will further discuss the possibility of fitness facilities using city park space for outdoor classes.

Councillors Kathy Sinclair and Sadie Hunter will be filing a notice of motion to launch a pilot project for outdoor space use. If it goes forward, city staff would identify parks that could host fitness classes, and facilities who want to use the spaces would need to provide proof of liability insurance, and pay a yearly flat rate.

Councillor Hunter said the city has ample space to allow a project like this, even beyond pandemic needs.

“We’ve proposed to have the rate set in alignment with what the City of Kelowna is doing. So I believe their flat rate for a commercial studio is $85 a year, so it’s much less than the per-use permit at $18 a day,” Hunter said.

Councillors behind the notice say they want to make the payment approach fair for all organizations who could use the space, and they want research to be done before anything is set in stone.

“It’s in our strategic plan to encourage increased use of public spaces and facilitate anything that we can to encourage that and look at new ways to get people out enjoying the outdoors, and I think that this is one way to do it,” she said.

The May 18 council meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. and can viewed online.
