B.C. records 1,785 new cases amid ‘third wave’ of COVID-19; 84 cases in Interior Health

VICTORIA — Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry acknowledged a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is in progress in B.C.

Henry made the statement while announcing 1,785 new cases of the virus over the past three days — an average of 595 cases every day. Henry said there were 556 new cases on Saturday (Mar. 20), 598 on Sunday and 631 on Monday.

Eighty-four of the new cases were uncovered within Interior Health.

There have now been 92,571 cases of COVID-19 in B.C. since the pandemic arrived, spread out as follows:

  • 21,747 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 469)
  • 54,076 — Fraser Health (up by 1,010)
  • 2,956 — Island Health (up by 89)
  • 8,051 — Interior Health (up by 84)
  • 5,576 — Northern Health (up by 133)
  • 165 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are 5,290 active cases of the virus in B.C. Monday, an increase of 83 from Friday. There are now 303 people in hospital with 80 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 294 active cases of COVID-19, down 47 from Friday. There are 14 patients hospitalized with six in critical care.

Sixteen more people have died of COVID-19 over the past three days, raising the province’s death toll to 1,437. One of the deaths took place in Interior Health, lifting the regional death toll to 114.

Henry says B.C. has found 166 new cases considered variants of concern, bringing the total variant cases in B.C. to 1,366. Two-hundred-thirty-seven of those cases are still active.

There are 9,330 people under active public health monitoring due to direct contact with COVID-19.

A further 85,746 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 93 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry notes 539,408 vaccine doses have now been delivered to British Columbians.
