B.C. finds 550 new COVID-19 cases, adds 182 variant cases

VICTORIA — B.C. has found 550 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday (Mar. 9) and the province has also uncovered another 182 variant cases.

The totals were included in an update prepared by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Among the new cases were 36 found in Interior Health.

The total for B.C. since the pandemic began is now 85,119, distributed as follows:

  • 19,846 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 133)
  • 49,897 — Fraser Health (up by 319)
  • 2,594 — Island Health (up by 7)
  • 7,670 — Interior Health (up by 36)
  • 4,953 — Northern Health (up by 52)
  • 159 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 3)

The 182 new cases identified as variants of concern raise the total in B.C. to 576, of which 113 are still active.

In total, there are 4,869 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., up by 15 from Monday. That includes 249 people in hospital and 68 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 362 active cases of the virus, up by 9 since Monday. There are 14 people in hospital and six in critical care.

Two more people have died of the virus, raising the provincial death toll to 1,393. Today marks one year since the first British Columbian died of COVID-19.

A total of 8,971 people are under active public health monitoring due to direct contact with COVID-19.

There are now 78,770 people considered fully recovered, or 93 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry says 343,381 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 86,938 second doses.
