B.C. COVID-19 case count grows by 542, but active case load shrinks

VICTORIA — B.C. has recorded 542 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday (Mar. 3), including 43 within Interior Health.

The numbers are included in an update provided by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

The new cases raise B.C.’s total to 81,909 since the pandemic began, spread out thusly:

  • 18,887 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 131)
  • 47,977 — Fraser Health (up by 292)
  • 2,453 — Island Health (up by 31)
  • 7,494 — Interior Health (up by 43)
  • 4,687 — Northern Health (up by 44)
  • 161 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

Henry says 18 of the new cases are variants of concern, swelling the total of variant cases found in B.C. to 200. Eleven of those cases remain active.

There are 4,654 active cases of the virus in B.C. Wednesday, down by 25 from Tuesday. Two-hundred-and-forty-six patients are in hospital and 64 are in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 368 active cases, down by 55 from Tuesday. There are 17 patients hospitalized and seven in critical care.

Seven more people have died of COVID-19, increasing the province’s death toll to 1,372. None of the deaths took place within IH, leaving the regional death toll at 104.

Henry reports 8,617 people under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact.

There are 75,819 people considered fully recovered from the virus, or 93 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry says 289,809 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 86,616 second doses.
