B.C. records 438 new cases of COVID-19, 16 in Interior Health, 22 variant cases

VICTORIA — B.C. has found 438 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday (Mar. 2), including 16 more cases in Interior Health.

The data was included in a briefing presented by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, who noted a discrepancy in data reporting over the past seven days has resulted in another 254 cases being added to the provincial total.

That total is now 81,367 cases, spread through the province as follows:

  • 18,756 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 137)
  • 47,685 — Fraser Health (up by 249)
  • 2,422 — Island Health (up by 19)
  • 7,451 — Interior Health (up by 16)
  • 4,643 — Northern Health (up by 17)
  • 160 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Twenty-two of the new cases are variants of concern, raising the total in B.C. to 182 variant cases. Henry says eight of them are active, with one person in hospital.

There are 4,679 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Tuesday, up by 215 from Monday. Henry reported 243 people in hospital including 63 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 423 active cases of the virus, down by 14 from Monday. Regionally, there are 19 people in hospital with seven in critical care.

Two more people have died of the virus, lifting the provincial death toll to 1,365. Neither of the deaths took place in Interior Health, leaving the regional death toll at 104.

There are now 8,445 people under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact.

A total of 75,255 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 92 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry notes 283,182 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far, including 86,537 second doses.
