B.C. records 521 new cases of COVID-19, with vast majority in the Lower Mainland

VICTORIA — B.C. has recorded another 521 cases of COVID-19 to end the work week, with 48 of those cases found within Interior Health.

The new figures came as part of an update on the B.C. Centre for Disease Control dashboard.

The total case count in B.C. is now 79,194, spread through the province as follows:

  • 18,292 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 121)
  • 46,579 — Fraser Health (up by 282)
  • 2,315 — Island Health (up by 37)
  • 7,343 — Interior Health (up by 48)
  • 4,511 — Northern Health (up by 33)
  • 160 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there are 4,665 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., an increase of 176 from Thursday. Of those, 232 people are in hospital and 63 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 550 active cases, an increase of 14 from Thursday. There are 26 people in hospital and seven in critical care.

Seven more people have died from the virus, swelling B.C.’s death toll to 1,355. One of those deaths took place in Interior Health, raising the regional death toll to 102.

The total number of people under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 contact now sits at 8,040.

There are 73,188 people now considered fully recovered from bouts with the virus, or 92 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry says a total of 252,373 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to British Columbians to date, including 73,808 second doses.
