B.C. COVID-19 case count grows by 395; 24 cases found in Interior Health

VANCOUVER — The province has found 395 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday (Feb. 25), including 24 in Interior Health.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry addressed media at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

The new cases raise B.C.’s COVID-19 case count to 78,673, spread throughout the province as follows:

  • 18,171 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 86)
  • 46,297 — Fraser Health (up by 207)
  • 2,278 — Island Health (up by 37)
  • 7,295 — Interior Health (up by 24)
  • 4,478 — Northern Health (up by 41)
  • 160 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry reported 4,489 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Thursday, down 179 from Wednesday. There are 228 people in hospital battling the virus, with 62 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 536 active cases, down 118 from Wednesday. That includes 24 people in hospital and nine in critical care.

There were ten more deaths in B.C., swelling the province’s death toll to 1,348. Health Minister Adrian Dix noted five of those deaths were found within Interior Health, as the health authority reported late Wednesday. The death toll in Interior Health is 101.

Henry says the number of detected cases of COVID-19 ‘variants of concern’ has reached 116, growing by 16 since last reported last Friday. Ninety-five of those cases are of the B.1.1.7 variant originating in the United Kingdom and 21 are of the B.1.351 variant first found in South Africa.

A total of 7,931 people are under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 exposure.

There are 72,781 people who have been considered fully recovered, or 93 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry says 239,833 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to British Columbians, including 68,157 second doses.
