B.C. COVID-19 case count grows by 559; no new cases or deaths in long-term care

VICTORIA — B.C. found a concerning 559 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday (Feb. 23), but Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported some positive indicators in the province’s fight against the virus.

Henry said there were no new cases or deaths reported in long-term care settings Tuesday. She attributed the data to the results of immunization in B.C.’s long-term care homes.

There are 43 new cases within Interior Health Tuesday. The total B.C. COVID-19 case count has risen to 77,822, spread through the province as follows:

  • 17,977 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 132)
  • 45,831 — Fraser Health (up by 278)
  • 2,206 — Island Health (up by 39)
  • 7,241 — Interior Health (up by 43)
  • 4,417 — Northern Health (up by 66)
  • 156 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

Henry reported 4,677 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Tuesday, an increase of 117 from Monday. Of those active cases, 238 people are in hospital and 69 are in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 638 active cases, up by 14 from Monday. There are 20 people in hospital including eight in critical care.

One more person died of the virus, raising the provincial death toll to 1,336. The Interior Health death toll remains at 96.

A total of 7,881 people are under active public health monitoring due to direct COVID-19 exposure.

The number of those considered fully recovered is now 71,753, or 92 per cent of all recorded cases.

The province notes 224,354 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have now been administered, including 58,896 second doses.
