Province records 428 new COVID-19 cases, 61 in Interior Health

VICTORIA — There are 428 new cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia Tuesday (Jan. 5). The new totals are found in the B.C. Centre for Disease Control dashboard update.

Among the new cases are 61 within Interior Health.

The new cases bring the total in B.C. to 54,629 since the pandemic began, spread through the province as follows:

  • 12,614 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 90)
  • 34,442 — Fraser Health (up by 223)
  • 1,001 — Island Health (up by 9)
  • 4,239 — Interior Health (up by 61)
  • 2,231 — Northern Health (up by 45)
  • 107 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are 6,472 active cases of the virus in the province Tuesday, with 367 patients in hospital including 77 in critical care.

In Interior Health, there are 769 active cases of COVID-19, including 35 people in hospital and seven in intensive care.

Eight more people have died of the virus, including one within Interior Health. That brings the provincial death toll to 954 – 33 of those in Interior Health.

A total of 45,999 people are considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 84 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, the province says 28,209 people have now received their first doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
