KAMLOOPS – A Kamloops care home for seniors is reporting a staff member that has reported positive for COVID-19.

The Hamlets at Westsyde General Manager Bob Attfield says he learned yesterday (Nov 14) that a care-aid worker has received a positive test. No long-term care residents have tested positive for COVID-19 at the facility.

Attfield says Interior Health (IH) was notified immediately of the situation. Despite just one person being infected, Attfield says IH declared an outbreak on two floors within the five buildings of the facility.

Staff are continuing to follow regular COVID-19 procedures and are now being screened for COVID-19 symptoms twice a day. In addition, staff are now limited to working within their building only. No staff is allowed to move between different buildings within the facility until further notice.

Attfield says meetings will be held with IH officials daily as they work to control the situation.

Until further notice, no visitors are being allowed to make visits to the facility except for patients in palliative care.

Attfield says it is more important than ever to follow health protocols including social distancing, hand washing and the use of masks. “This is no longer a lower mainland problem,” said Attfield. “It’s here in Kamloops. It’s at our doorstep.”
