KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops man who admitted to triggering a 2017 shootout and standoff with Kamloops RCMP has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Shane William Caron will spend just over 3-and-a-half years, thanks to time spent in custody since his October 27, 2017 arrest.

On that date, Caron led police on a lengthy pursuit stretching from the Kamloops North Shore, through the Tk’emlups reserve to the G & M Trailer Park where he holed up in his parents home.

As the chase tore through the Mount Paul Industrial Park, gunfire was exchanged between Caron and pursuing RCMP officers.

Caron pleaded guilty to several charges in January of this year, including assault with a weapon and discharging a firearm with intent.

Speaking to CFJC Today, Crown prosecutor Chris Balison says he had requested a total of 12 years in prison for Caron, while defence counsel asked for six years.

Balison says Judge Stephen Harrison came down at eight years for the count of discharging a firearm. Harrison imposed lesser concurrent sentences for the other charges.

Balison noted Supt. Syd Lecky of Kamloops RCMP delivered a victim impact statement on behalf of the local detachment, saying the incident had a significant impact on the officers who were involved. Balison says that impact was recognized by Judge Harrison in imposing the sentence.
