B.C. sees 269 new COVID-19 cases over three days, now has more than 900 active cases

VICTORIA — The province of B.C. has eclipsed the 5,000 mark for its COVID-19 case count after another weekend of elevated transmission.

In a news conference Monday (Aug. 24), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 269 new cases of the virus over the past three days — 109 recorded Saturday, 81 Sunday and 79 Monday. Five of the newly-recorded cases are epidemiologically-linked to positive cases.

That brings the province’s total to 5,184 recorded cases since the pandemic arrived, spread through B.C. as follows:

  • 1,651 (Vancouver Coastal)
  • 2,739 (Fraser Health)
  • 166 (Island Health)
  • 425 (Interior Health)
  • 127 (Northern Health)
  • 76 (Reside outside of Canada)

The total of 425 within Interior Health is an increase of eight since Friday.

There are now 913 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, including 18 people in hospital and five in critical or intensive care. A total of 2,594 people are under active monitoring by public health officials because they have been in close contact with people who are positive for the virus.

One more person has died of the virus, raising the B.C. death toll to 203.

A total of 4,068 people are considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 78 per cent of all recorded cases.

Dr. Henry reported one new outbreak, at MSA Manor in Abbotsford, a longterm care home. There are ten active outbreaks in the healthcare system.
