Province reports 27 new cases of COVID-19, new community outbreak on Haida Gwaii

VICTORIA — Provincial health officials are reporting 27 new cases of COVID-19 Friday (July 24).

In a news release, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says that brings the provincial total to 3,419 since the pandemic arrived here.

According to Interior Health, there are now 86 cases of COVID-19 linked to the community exposure events in Kelowna. Seventy-four of those people live in Interior Health, with the remaining 12 in the Lower Mainland.

IH says it has identified an additional case in a worker at Kelowna General Hospital, bringing the total there to eight. The health authority says there is no evidence any patients were exposed to this staffer.

Four of the new cases were recorded within in Interior Health, raising the regional total to 319.

Here is where the 3,419 cases in B.C. have been found:

  • 1,057 (Vancouver Coastal)
  • 1,764 (Fraser Health)
  • 142 (Island Health)
  • 319 (Interior Health)
  • 79 (Northern Health)
  • 58 (Reside outside of Canada)

Dr. Henry says there are now 294 active cases in B.C., including 12 people who are in hospital and three who are in intensive care.

One more person has died of the virus, bringing the provincial death toll to 191.

Of the 3,419-case total, 2,934 people are considered fully recovered, or 86 per cent.

There is one new community outbreak, with 13 positive cases on the island group of Haida Gwaii. Twelve of those cases are active and one has recovered. Dr. Henry says all of the patients on Haida Gwaii are locals.
