KAMLOOPS — Firefighters are holding a grass fire that ignited Tuesday (July 14) near the Cinnamon Ridge compost facility in check.

The fire was discovered Tuesday afternoon just north of the compost facility, not far from an aircraft beacon.

Fire Information Officer Gagan Lidhran says the fire grew to 3.2 hectares and B.C. Wildfire personnel are joining Kamloops Fire Rescue crews in mopping up hot spots today.

“There are ten crew members from the B.C. Wildfire Service who are up there today,” Lidhran told CFJC Today. “They’re just doing their final patrol and just mopping up the fire to make sure there are no more hot spots in the area — to make sure that it is no longer on fire or there are any warmer areas.”

Initial reports suggested the fire may have been caused by an exploding electrical transformer. Lidhran says there is no confirmed cause at this point.

“Usually our prevention officers, or if it’s [Kamloops Fire Rescue], will have their process in terms of assessing the fire and how it started,” said Lidhran. “They kind of have to do a breakdown of the causes and rule everything out, so it’s a bit of a process.”

The fire danger rating in the Kamloops area remains ‘very low’ to ‘low’.
