Live Nation Cancels Shows

Live Nation, North America’s largest concert promoter and venue operator, is instructing its touring acts to prepare to return home in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. All Live Nation tours are affected, both domestically and internationally, through the end of the month. Concert and event promoter AEG is taking the same steps.

Live Nation will reportedly re-evaluate the situation at the beginning of April with the goal of resuming touring in May or June. Affected tours include Billie Eilish, Tool, Kiss, The Strokes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Post Malone, Zac Brown Band, Cher, Chris Stapleton and many more.

Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino downplayed how the spread of the virus would affect the concert industry just two weeks ago, saying, “Most of our business doesn’t start until the middle of June onwards. So the next few months, we’ll have some cancellations, I assume, here and there in some arenas and clubs, but the heart of our business happens this summer.”

A number of individual acts have already postponed or canceled tours in the U.S. or abroad, including Pearl Jam, Green Day, Papa Roach, Avril Lavigne and many others. Pearl Jam stated in an FAQ on the band’s website, “Our team worked tirelessly to see if we could keep the tour going. It became clear by Monday afternoon that we would not be able to — in good conscience — head out on the road.”

The festival circuit has been hit by the effects of the pandemic as well, with South By Southwest, Coachella, Ultra Music and others all put on hold. Other large-scale festivals, including Sonic Temple in the U.S. and Glastonbury in the U.K., have yet to announce their plans.
