KAMLOOPS — It’s now been determined that a fire that broke out at the Travelodge last week was human caused, however RCMP are still investigating to determine if there is criminality involved.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says it’s still not known whether the January 30th fire was caused by negligence or arson.

“The man who was seen fleeing the room and then leaving in a pick-up truck has been identified but not located yet,” she says. “Police officer’s next steps will be to find the man and interview him to determine the cause of the fire and if it was criminal or not.”

At the time of the fire, witnesses smelled smoke and went to investigate. A man was then seen leaving a second-floor room.

“We believe that the man who rented the room and then left after the fire started, knows that the police are looking for him,” she says,. “So we’re just asking him to present himself to the nearest RCMP detachment so he can discuss what his actions were that day.”

Shelkie says police are continuing to investigate and ask the man involved to come forward.
