Above normal temperatures warming up Kamloops this week

KAMLOOPS — Combined with today’s high of 8 degrees, Environment Canada is forecasting an abnormally warm week for the Kamloops area.

While it’ll be a mostly sunny start Monday morning in Kamloops, Meteorologist Jonathan Bau says the wind will pick up and blow a few clouds into the area later tomorrow afternoon (Jan. 27).

“For Monday night, towards the midnight hours we’ll start to see some rain moving in, however the freezing levels will drop to about 500 metres,” Bau explains, “So we’re looking at a possibility for some snow over the higher terrain, and over the communities up in the hills there. Maybe about 2-4 cm at this time for those communities, and of course about 2-4 mm of rain down in the valley.”

Continuing with the higher temperatures on Tuesday, Bau says the area will have a high of about 6 degrees with a mix of sun and cloud.

He adds that the warm weather is slightly unusual for the area, matching the unusually cold weather Kamloops felt two weeks ago.

“Normal temperatures for the Kamloops area this time of year is a high of zero, and a low of minus 7,” he says, “The warmer temperatures are certainly a nice break from the cold arctic outbreaks that we experienced earlier this month.”

As for the area highways, Bau says a few sections of the Coquihalla Highway on Monday night may see 5-10 cm of snow fall.
