QUESNEL, B.C. — A Cariboo man is lucky to be alive after spending 20 hours in the bush.

Quesnel RCMP say it all began at around 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, when the man’s truck got stuck in the deep snow, about 70 kilometres southwest of Quesnel.

The man driving the truck left his spouse in the vehicle and rode his snowmobile to his property. However he failed to return.

The spouse was rescued about an hour later after a man in Likely, BC heard her calling for assistance over a VHF radio frequency.

The search then began for the man who wasn’t located until just after 11:30 this morning by helicopter.

“When the man’s snowmobile got stuck, he attempted to walk back to his wife and vehicle. Exhaustion set in and the man hunkered down for the night and waited for help,” says Quesnel RCMP Sgt. Richard Weseen.

“It is important that those who utilize the back country be prepared and have the equipment for emergencies. The essentials are not simply food and extra clothing in this day and age, but also include technology such as GPS tracking and satellite phones.”

He says the man was transported to hospital with symptoms of mild hypothermia and cold exposure.
