Parking changes in place with elevators in RIH Clinical Services Building out of service

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health wants patients using Royal Inland Hospital to know that they may need to give themselves more time to get to appointments at the hospital.

In a release, IHA says the elevators in the Clinical Services Building are out of service until approximately Jan. 31 due to unexpected equipment failure.

The Clinical Services Building (CSB) is found along Columbia Street and includes much of the hospital’s parking, and several outpatient clinical services.

Without elevator service, those looking to access the building off Columbia Street will have five flights of stairs to contend with, so anyone with mobility difficulties should consider a different way to enter. (See below for map)

IHA says extra staff and volunteers will be on hand to help patients and visitors reach their destinations safely, but delays should be expected and people are asked to plan accordingly. The health authority adds that it apologizes for the inconvenience this outage will bring, and it’s working with vendors to fix the problem and get the elevators running again as soon as possible.

For RIH patients, visitors, staff, and physicians, the lack of elevator service means there will be no parking fees at the hospital until the elevators are running again. Signs will be in place and traffic controllers will be on site during peak hours.

Patient and visitor parking has been temporarily moved to the upper staff parkade above the hospital, while staff and physician parking has moved from the upper parkade to the CSB.

People looking for parking to use the Urgent Primary Care and Learning Centre meanwhile, will need to find parking off-site, or be dropped off at the front door along Columbia Street.

The release also states that transit users who are dropped off at the stop along Columbia Street who need assistance should plan ahead accordingly.

Services within the CSB include:

  • Level 2 (elevator access from main building via pedestrian bridge only): Outpatient clinics – Lab, pre-surgical screening, pulmonary function, cardiology, neurology, Vascular Improvement Program, IV therapy/ID clinic/PICC clinic, and rapid access clinics
  • Level 1 (no elevator access): Outpatient clinics – Telehealth, orthopaedic clinic, TRFO – Thompson Region Family Obstetrics Clinic (maternity), Rae Fawcett Breast Health Clinic, Rae Fawcett Simulation Centre, as well as the Ken Lepin Lecture Theatre, and UBC Faculty of Medicine
  • Level P1 includes the Urgent Primary Care and Learning Centre
  • Levels P1 to P4 are parking
