KAMLOOPS — The city is putting more focus on diverting organics from the landfill in 2020.

In December, the Civic Operations Committee asked staff to begin a waste reduction strategy for organics.

While the city has designated depots for composting, organics are still making up about 30 per cent of the garbage in the landfill.

The City’s Streets and Environmental Services Manager Glen Farrow says the plan for pick-up of compostable materials is still being developed.

“Our trucks aren’t necessarily the problem; the collection part of it is relatively easy,” Farrow said. “It’s still processing where are we going to take that product? I said that quite a few times over the last couple years, it still remains the question. Part of that answer is tied in with the ultimate solution for our biosolids.”
