Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP says world stage confidence, fiscal responsibility needed for next Conservative leader

KAMLOOPS — With Andrew Scheer ready to step down as leader of the Conservative Party, the next to take the helm will be decided in June.

Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo’s MP spoke with CFJC Today, and painted a picture of what kind of leader the Tories will need for the rest of 2020.

Cathy McLeod figures those who are going to run will be announcing within the next week or so, and says she’s hoping there won’t be too many names put forward.

“This is a short leadership race compared to the last one, and I think it is by necessity because of the minority parliament,” McLeod explains. “I’m hoping that it’s going to be a smaller group that are running, because there was too many last time and it was hard to distinguish one candidate from the other.”

For the next person to take the reins of the Conservative Party, McLeod says the opposition needs someone who exudes confidence, and responsibility.

“I look at what I believe we need in our country, and I believe that we need a government that is fiscally responsible, is supportive of the economy, and is not spending money from taxpayers but is actually creating an opportunity to build wealth in this country,” she stresses. “Certainly the fiscal issues are important, but I’m also looking at — for example, we have a very serious situation on the world stage right now, and who can I envision stepping up and giving me confidence in terms of Canada, and Canadians’ role on the world stage?”

Andrew Scheer will stay on as head of the party until the Conservatives’ leadership election, held June 27 from Toronto.
