Back country enthusiasts urged to avoid avalanche terrain in North and South Columbias

KAMLOOPS — Avalanche Canada is asking those using the back country this week to take caution.

Forecaster Anne St. Clair says the North and South Columbias are experiencing considerable avalanche risks today, and those risks could increase tomorrow.

“A powerful storm is impacting these regions and it’s expected to bring intense snowfall today and overnight with some strong winds, and this will create some very dangerous avalanche conditions in the North and South Columbias,” St. Clair says.

Avalanche Canada is forecasting a high danger rating for the regions tomorrow, and the risks will remain considerable later in the week.

“With these conditions we recommend avoiding travel in avalanche terrain,” St. Clair says. “We expect to have significant amounts of new snow burying weaker, old layers of snow and this creates very complicated and hazardous conditions.

“So we encourage folks to get the gear, get the training, and get the forecast.”
