KAMLOOPS — Hundreds of people gathered at Thompson Rivers University on Thursday morning (Nov. 7) for the school’s annual scholarship breakfast. This year’s breakfast focused on the School of Business and Economics.

Contributions from the breakfast will be added to the Limitless Future of TRU campaign, a $50 million campaign that aims to help students with scholarships and bursaries. The university says the demand for financial aid is growing.

“One of the things we highlighted this morning is that this year we received 2,100 applications for student awards,” said director of advancement at TRU, Karen Gamracy. “That’s double the amount received last year, so there is still an incredible need for scholarship and bursary support.”

Students from the business and economics program spoke on Thursday. Haley Coss and Hemisha Sanghvi both received $5,000 scholarships for their top academic performance. The awards also include employment opportunities in their chosen field.

Last year, TRU handed out $1.5 million in student scholarships. It hopes to do the same this year. It launched an additional 36-hour fundraising campaign following the breakfast.

“Our goal is to raise $36,000 in the next 36 hours. The breakfast kicks that off and it’s an opportunity for people to give whatever they can. Every little bit matters,” noted Gamracy. “We had phenomenal success last year. This is our third annual TRU Day of Giving.”
