Stand Up for Mental Health brings comedic confidence to Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — As part of World Mental Health Day, the Stand-Up for Mental Health comedy show will be lightening the mood, and brightening spirits Thursday night (Oct. 10) in Kamloops.

The show is part of a larger course where participants learn how to take on the comedic stage.

Stand Up for Mental health is the creation of David Granirer, a counsellor and comedian who wanted to give people a healthy outlet.

“So I’m a comic, I’m a counsellor, and I have depression,” says Granirer, “For the past 20 years, I’ve been teaching a stand-up comedy course at Langara College, which has nothing to do with mental health. But occasionally I would see someone come through and they would have a life-changing experience, and I thought, ‘Wow, wouldn’t it be cool to give this to people who wanted the experience, and who wanted to do comedy?'”

Tonight’s event showcases five comics, all with their own mental health and learning challenges.

“They come away with a lot of confidence,” notes Granirer. “Like I say, stand-up comedy is the hardest thing in the world, and if you can make 300 people laugh in a theatre, that’s a huge confidence builder — especially when you’re going through mental health stuff.”

Doors open at 6:30 for the 7:00 p.m show held at the Rex Theatre downtown, and tickets are still available for $20 at the door.
