KAMLOOPS — With the Thanksgiving weekend fast approaching, the Kamloops Food Bank has been busy putting together food hampers for people in need.

On Thursday, singles and couples came to the food bank on Wilson Street to get everything they need and more for Thanksgiving. By the weekend, the non-profit will have provided enough food for more than 2,000 people in Kamloops.

“We live in a city that ensures we can give special hampers to our clients every Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Kamloops Food Bank executive director Bernadette Siracky. “We’re in the middle of giving out Thanksgiving hampers. So yesterday (Oct. 9), we gave hampers out to 220 families. Today (Oct. 10), we’re looking at almost 300, and then Fridays we give out hampers to seniors. So all together over this Thanksgiving season, we’re going to provide hampers to over 500 households in our city.”

98.3 CIFM afternoon drive host Chris Roach was at the food bank on Thursday, helping give out hampers. Roach was trying to burn off the turkey he gobbled down on Wednesday.

He attempted and ultimately failed to eat a 20-pound turkey, taking down about half of it. But Roach helped to raise more than $500 for the food bank with the initiative.

“I want everyone to know that through Roach’s phenomenal idea yesterday, and willingness to eat so much in one sitting, he was able to, in a very serious way, purchase 30 turkeys in support of our efforts in feeding our community’s most vulnerable. So, thank-you,” Siracky told Roach at the food bank on Thursday.

Roach added, “That’s what it’s all about. Thirty turkeys. I got half of one in my belly and now I go back to bed. I’m disappointed still.”
