WolfPack women’s soccer face crucial home games in playoff race

Oct 3, 2019 | 6:30 PM

KAMLOOPS —- Going head first into the stretch drive in the second half of the Canada West soccer season, the WolfPack will play two more crucially important games this weekend in their drive to strive for the playoffs.

At 1-4-3 the WolfPack women are in 7th place in the Pacific Division.

With six games left, they’re four points out of a top six playoffs.

While wins would have put them into the playoff picture, the WolfPack women are coming off two historic draws that leaves them undefeaed in three.

“It’s the first time the program has been unbeaten in three (straight) games since they entered into U SPORTS .” says head coach Mark Pennington. “So we’ll take the positives from it.”

This weekend the WolfPack are at home to two division opponents — Friday at 5pm head coach Mark Pennington will face his former team for the first time, when the WolfPack play the UBC Thunderbirds.

With 15 points UBC is in third place and in a solid playoff position.

Saturday Victoria is here.

The Vikes are one of the teams the WolfPack are trying to overtake to get into the playoff mix.

The top four men’s teams in the Pacific Division make playoffs.

With division standings based on winning percentage and not points, going into the weekend the WolfPack are in fifth place behind UBC Okanagan on percentages for the final playoff.

TRU has six games left —- five of them are on the road.

For the second weekend in a row the WolfPack will be missing their goal scoring leader.

James Fraser is out with an injury, meaning head coach John Antulov has had to do some creative juggling with his bench depth.

“I think that’s the key thing.” says Antulov. “We knew some of these guys coming in were going to be good players for us. Getting the opportunity like they did, a lot of guys stepped up to the plate and it gives us those options as a coaching staff if some guys aren’t on that day for those guys to be able to come in and give us a lift.”

This weekend the WolfPack play at 6-1-2 UBC and 3-2-3 Victoria.
