ACTIVISTS URGE MARIAH CAREY TO CANCEL SAUDI CONCERT: Activists are urging Mariah Carey to cancel her upcoming concert in Saudi Arabia over the country’s alleged human rights abuses. Mariah is set to perform alongside DJ Tiesto and Sean Paul on Thursday at King Abdullah Economic City, north of Jeddah. She would be the highest-profile Western female entertainer to perform in the country since it began to loosen industry restrictions a few years ago. Code Pink, a women-led peace and human rights activist organization, is urging the singer to back out, saying her involvement with the Middle East country will only help Saudi Arabia “artwash” its war crimes, specifically its war in Yemen and its repression of women, journalists and government dissidents. “Why is Mariah Carey planning a January 31, 2019 concert in Saudi Arabia? Doesn’t she know Saudi Arabia is one of the most repressive and murderous regimes on the planet?” Code Pink asked in a statement on its website. “Dear @MariahCarey, I hear you’re planning on performing in #Saudi Arabia,” wrote Egyptian-American journalist Mona Eltahawy. “Are you aware that women’s rights activists have been detained without charge since May 2018?”
BRITNEY SPEARS HAS SECRET CAMEO IN UPCOMING HORROR-COMEDY FILM ‘CORPORATE ANIMALS’: Britney Spears makes a cameo appearance in the upcoming horror-comedy Corporate Animals, Patrick Brice, the film’s director, announced Monday at the Los Angeles Times’ studio at the Sundance Film Festival. One of the characters in the movie is a big fan of Spears and the crew was able to get the singer to film a scene, Brice said. “Through a series of connections we were able to get 10 minutes of her time to record this, which was so awesome,” Brice said. “Corporate Animals” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival yesterday.
It’s tradition for the Super Bowl Halftime Show act to hold a press conference on the Wednesday before the big day, but Maroon 5 will not be doing one this year.
The NFL released a statement saying that the band’s halftime show will speak for itself. “Maroon 5 has been working hard on a Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show that will meet and exceed the standards of this event,” the statement reads. “As it is about music, the artists will let their show do the talking as they prepare to take the stage this Sunday. Starting with the Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show announcement, we began a cross-platform rollout of behind-the-scenes footage and content from each of the halftime performers. Instead of hosting a press conference, this social and digital media rollout will continue through Sunday across our owned and operated media assets as well as through the platforms of the artists.”
