Coldplay singer Chris Martin took to the stage at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City’s Central Park on Saturday night (September 29th) to calm the crowd after the sound of a barrier crashing was mistaken for gunshots.

Martin, who was joined by a police officer, told the panicked concertgoers, “There’s no need to panic. There’s no need to run fast. There’s no need to push people out of the way. Nobody is trying to hurt anybody. You’re all safe.”

The New York Police Department confirmed what actually happened, reporting that no shots were fired at the event, which also included performances from John Legend, Janet Jackson, the Weeknd, Cardi B and others.

One Twitter user wrote, “One of the most terrifying moments of my entire life at the Global Citizen Festival. A barrier fell causing a sound like a gunshot and the crowd started running in panic. Never seen herd mentality like that before. Disgraceful that we all have to live in constant fear of guns.”
