Tyrell Chadwick enjoying two-sport life during memorable sporting summer

It’s the second time this summer that Chadwick has represented Kamloops at a big sporting event. Last month, he helped the Zone 2 Thompson Okanagan baseball team earn a bronze medal at the B.C. Summer Games.

“It was a huge honour to be able to playing against the best players in the province and go and compete at a high level and show our capabilities,” notes the 15-year-old who goes to Westsyde Secondary.

His dad Ray Chadwick, who’s also the manager of the TRU baseball program, admires what Tyrell’s been able to accomplish as a two-sport athlete.

“It’s very impressive to see him play for Team BC on two different venues, basketball and baseball,” says Ray. It makes me really proud and it’s fun to watch and see him grow. He’s a good athlete, but he’s also a really good kid.”

Ray wanted Tyrell to play as many sports as he could growing up and now he’s excelling at two. Tyrell says his dad has pushed him but also encouraged him along the way.

“He’s tough. He’s hard on me, but he’s really supportive,” says Tyrell. “He really helps me out after games, tells me what to look for, what I missed throughout the game, and helps me improve later.”

Ray adds, “I tell him all the time that to be good you have to work hard and he does that. He was not one of those athletically-gifted kids. He really works hard at both baseball and basketball, and it’s paying off for him at a young age.”

While he loves the game of basketball, baseball is Tyrell’s No. 1 love. But he hopes to pursue both as he nears university with offers already on the baseball side.

“It’ll be hard,” notes Tyrell when thinking about having to choose between the two sports. “I’m kind of leaning towards baseball right now. It just comes a little more naturally, but I want to be able to play both for as long as possible.”
