Heat warning gone- but lightning continues to cause fires

KAMLOOPS — It’s a new month. The heat warning in effect the past few days has been lifted, but that doesn’t mean the fire danger is gone.

Kamloops Fire and Rescue beat down a small grassfire in Knutsford last night.

The blaze was reported at the edge of the City boundaries about 10:30 PM.

Captain Mike Haynes says a power line had come down and started the small fire. Crews were able to get to it quickly and keep it small.

Wildfire crews are fighting several small lightning-caused fires in the Salmon Arm/ Shuswap area. The three are at Mt. Bastion, Larch Hills and Mara Lake.

There are also three fires just east of Sicamous.

Up north, lightning has caused 21 new fires to break out in the past couple of days. The two closest to us are at Sodium Lake near 70 mile, both under a hectare and there’s a group of
half a dozen fires in the Horse Lake area near 100 Mile.

Again, all those are lightning-caused and, at this point, are very small.
