Man stretching his legs during Coquihalla delay finds woman’s body

MERRITT, B.C. — UPDATE: Merritt RCMP say the woman whose body was found beside the Coquihalla Highway on the weekend has now been identified.

Police say she was a 27 year old First Nations woman from the Northwest Territories who had connections to the South Okanagan.

Mounties are still informing the woman’s family about her passing.

Her body was found Sunday night by a man who was caught in a traffic backup near Mine Creek Road.

The man got out of his vehicle to stretch his legs and found the woman’s body by the side of the highway.

Investigators are still trying to determine how and why she died.

EARLIER: Merritt RCMP are investigating after a motorist stopped in a delay on the Coquihalla Highway stumbled across a woman’s body.

The discovery took place on Sunday after a collision on the Coquihalla near Mine Creek Road stopped northbound traffic.

As one person caught in the delay took a break to stretch his legs, he discovered the body just off the side of the highway.

RCMP say no overt signs of criminality were observed, but Mounties will continue to investigate, along with the BC Coroners Service.

An autopsy will be scheduled.

Police say the woman appeared to have darker skin and long hair, dyed blonde and red.

She doesn’t match any known missing person reports and police have yet to make a positive identification of the woman.
